turbo cam /230F /Questions 200 1988

My son has ordered a cam and gear from IPD for his 230FT. My Question is will I be able to use the stock turbo cam with a adjustable cam gear and get more power out of a stock 230F engine. The cam that in the engine now is a M cam.
How much more power will I get from this set up,and do I gain any other performance from it such as better gas milage. Thanks for a reply
Rodney

turbo cam /230F /Questions 200 1988

My understanding is that by putting the turbo cam in the non turbo will only really help in the upper power ranges(approx 2500rpm+)and if your wagon has an automatic you may not be pleased with the results. My '89 244 rarely sees the other side of 3500, but that's me. If you've got a stick you might see a little better response and improvement due to lower (higher numerically) gearing.

turbo cam /230F /Questions 200 1988

I would guess that you can expect a 15 or 20 horsepower improvement with the new cam. It's my understanding that the B230FX (I think years 1992 and 1993, maybe in Europe) engine used a more aggressive cam (like the ipd turbo cam) as well as a better head, and it supposedly put out 140 hp. Doing just the cam (not the exhaust or head) would obviously be somewhere between the stock 114 hp and FX's 140 hp.

I don't think the cam itself will improve or affect the gas mileage, but indirectly it could influence it. I recently asked about ways to convince *my* parents that I should get the cam, and gas mileage was mentioned. The improvement in power could perhaps keep me from flooring the pedal on the highway looking for non-existant power, as I would now be fast enough to merge quickly.

What argument worked on you? Have you relinquished complete control of the car to your son? Keep me updated as to how the car runs with the new cam. I'm still considering pretty seroiusly that modification, and so I'd like to hear how it goes.

Gas mileage ... 200 1988

You actually will not see a difference in gas mileage. Power is a function of how much air and fuel is pumped into the engine at a given moment. The cam will determine the point in which that particular amount will come in.

The difference is that you're not flooring it and getting the waiting game instead.

He bought the car his self. He's 16,I had to sign the title papers but he paid for it. As for the updates he's paying for them also. The old turbo cam I'm wanting to put in my 88/245 wagon.

Thanks for the reply, I'll just order the VX and cam gear for the car and be done with the whole job at one time.
