Condensed version - I've stripped one of the tubing fittings on the ZF steering rack on our '90 744 TI.
I need to find out what the size of the fittings on the rack are and what their thread pitch is. It is quite fine. (Actually smooth now!)
Long story - Had a massive fluid leak, after much cleaning and observation, decided that it had to be the short steel line on the steering rack. I got the line out, kinda like one of those Chineese puzzles made from nails. Very rusty with an evident hole. Put the new tube in, and it did not fit exactly at one end - the other went in by finger tightening. I undid the tube and put the bad end in first. Then I put the good end in with a wrench.
No leaks until I ran the engine, then I had another massive leak. Clean and observe again, found a small leak at the fitting that I had trouble with, and an apparent leak in the other tube! Removed the other tube (I had to remove the first tube and both of the other lines in order to get the long one out.) This tube was also rusted and had an evident hole too! Got new tube and cleaned all four threaded holes in the rack - found metal slivers in one of the first tube's fittings. Bummer
Now I took the entire rack out and cleaned everything up. I have one hole badly stripped, and one burred, both on the short tube.
I need to find inserts or heli-coils to repair the rack.
Anyone have any information on the thread size? A good machine shop that does metric work?
Anyone need a GOOD parts car that does not steer?
