Oil Pressure Light 200 1987

The yesterday along with my other Troubles (previous post) my oil pressure warning light came on and kind of went off and on. I Coasted to a gas station a It was pouring rain so I sat in the volvo and read up on the oil pressure system. anyway. I had a friend that live near where I was and I decited to see if he had a oil pressure gauge to check my pressure. I started it up and no oil light came on. I drove to his house and just as I was arriving the light came back on. Well he came out and we decited it was probably just an electical issue. (My wiring is terrible, I think I am going to have to get a new wiring harness) But anyway, I think in the process of messing with the sensor I destroyed it, it was very brittle. After messing around for a while I decided just to head to where I was going. The light never came back on, and the engine sounded normal. However, when I first start it up after not running for a while it does some tick tick tick sounds but for less than I minute. I assume this is just while the oil gets pumping. I am planning on getting a gauge to check the system but I drove it about 250 miles so if it is not right I probably hurt something.

Where can I get a new sensor to replace?

BTW it took me about 6 hours to make a 2 hour trip...i still have faith in volvos. :)

Just replace the oil wire (blk) by cutting it at the grey connector on the firewall and run the replacement along back and inner left fender to the oil sender (Same for alt. wire if you do that too). See for example http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/?id=673372

The sensor/sender is often the source of oil leaks at front. So after wiping, you find oil on it (use finger), after the engine has been run, replace it.

Before you jump through hoops, carefully and thoroughly inspect the harness at the oil sensor and alternator. You'll probably find thet the insulation has crumbled and fallen off the oil wire and that the conductors are intermittently touching ground.

Whenever they ground, the light comes on.

It's a very common problem. Almost all of my early 240s did that, including my '86. I finally pulled down the harness where it runs under the front pulley and rewired everything and re-wrapped everything.

like don said, it was probably your harness. i had to ask if the wire was SUPPOSED to have insulation, because mine had completely disappeared and unraveled a bit. little strands were reaching out and touching ground and random (bumpy) points in travel and it flashed the light on and off. i trimmed the wire up and jiggled the connector a little. works great now (or doesnt work at all). you should check into a new (or good used) harness for sure. the SECOND i get enough money im purchasing one, and im sure a good portion of my troubles will be laid to rest (i should say my worries, because i dont have any real TROUBLES yet, but im sure i will soon with that harness)

      good luck
      handsome greg
