car stalls at light when making left turn , also randomly engine will surge between 500-900 rpm
have changed plugs,wires,fuel filter.

When our '88 745 did that it was the idle control valve. You might want to check it out, also your throttle body and idle adjuster could be dirty.

I had this problem with my 1988 740 turbo. We were told that the turbo tends to really heat up the engine compartment. This would make the spark plug wires get overheated and turn mushy (so we were told). It was recommended that we get heavy duty insulated wires. Believe it or not it seems to have worked.
