Rattling M46 manual tranny

my m46 4 spd OD tranny (1980 240) rattles, is very loose and slips out of 4th gear on the highway. Please advise. Can the shift lever linkage be replaced to make it tighter?

Mine rattled when I had a failed right engine mount. You could have a loose bushing on the gearshift lever -- take the boot off, then the detent plate, and you should be able to assess the condition of the plastic pivot ball.
