How Do I Identify / Locate the EGR Valve (1990-240 - B230F) 200 1990

Have been advised to clean the EGR Valve to bring down my NOx emissions.

How do I locate the EGR Valve and any hints/pointers on removal.
Subject vehicle is 1990 240 w/ manual trans.

Regards,

Joe Walsh

Are you sure you have one? If you have the relatively uncommon California emissions 240 running the 572 ECU with EGR, there will be an electronic gizmo behind the battery on a bracket. It is unlike the typical LH 2.4 240. That is part or all of the valve, I can't quite remember off-hand if there is more to the valve on the left side of the engine.

Yes--the valve itself 200 1990

The mechanism next to the battery is a solenoid activator for the actual valve. It's controlled by the ECU using feedback from the OX sensor and maybe the temp sensor, throttle setting, etc.

The valve is below the intake manifold and connects via steel tube around the rear of the block to the exhaust manifold, and by hose to the intake. When the ECU and activator say Open, the valve lets engine vacuum suck a certain % of exhaust back into the intake.

On the 740Ts with EGR, the EGR valve is fastened under the two bolts that hold the Oil Trap to the block. It makes removing the Oil Trap a real chore.

Well, I wasn't sure after reading a number of postings here. So I called
a local Volvo dealer and priced the part for my car...and he quoted me the
price after making the usual inquiries. I know there is a different EGR valve
for manual and auto transmission B230F engines. I also know the car
was originally sold by the Volvo dealer in Princeton, NJ so it's definitely
not a California car. Even my original owners manual says to clean the
EGR valve every 25,000 miles.....
