Somebody please remind me... 140-160 1974

...that when I'm fooling around with my fuel injection, changing pressures, tweaking mixture, measuring and balancing injectors, checking vacuum connections, blah blah blah, that I should be sure to check the ignition timing.

Damned thing was 0 advance again. Reset to 12-15 BTDC runs like a champ. I have a timing creep problem. It's clamped down hard, too, as hard as I dare. I run it at 80+ for several hours during my weekend trips, so I guess that must do it.

Anyone else have this happen?

What kind of timing gears do you have?
Fiber gears sometimes do that on the way out.

I assume you still have the points ignition; if so, try a little grease on the distributor cam.

Nope, pertronix. 140-160 1974

Thought so. 140-160 1974

I know several people who have the same problem with Pertronix and haven't found a fix yet. They'll creep 15 degrees either way from where set.

That's why I use Crane or Lumenition ignitions.

BTW, it's a truism that 90% of fuel injection problems turn out to be ignition.

Pertronix fix 140-160 1974

After the Pertronix is installed for a while, the ring that mounts around the distributor shaft loosens up a bit and can rotate several degrees from it's original position. Mine could turn at least 15 degrees. I backed it with a couple bits of electrical wrap (no adhesive) and pushed it back on.

From what you said, I was afraid it was faulty or varying field sensing based on heat or something, but it seems to be just the mounting.

I will regularly check it. And look for an XR700.

Truism ..... indeed.... 140-160 1974

Thanks for the data. Mine has been pinging a bit more than usual. I thought it might be bad fuel. I have a 71 142E with a Perlux ignition.
I will check my timing also.
Thanks for the reminder.
Jeremy

Well then. 140-160 1974

That's very interesting. Never heard that before. Tanx.

Well then. 140-160 1974

Well, it's not a feature they advertise... nor have I heard of any problems in non-Volvo dizzies. I think the trigger thingy just isn't a solid fit on that particular shaft. A lot of people have used them without complaint, but a lot of people have cars that don't run very well, eitherm -- not sure some of them would notice.

Solution 140-160 1974

Happened to me with my first Pertronix in the first five minutes.
The ring is set up for stock specs but your 30+ year old dizzy cam lobes ain't stock anymore (any metal can be worn a bit even by the softest material if rubbed long enough, agree?). Shim with electrical tape...just a tiny little piece on one lobe...not easy to do (slip ring on without wrinkling or displacing the tape), but it is the solution...'least it worked for me.
Most people I advise to do this, don't. So, I won't feel bad...
Best,
Shayne.
