Help with rear door speaker upgrade 900 1993

I am in the process of trying to install Boston Acoustics speakers in all doors of my 945 - different models front and rear, of course. The front ones replaced the OEM units with just minor mods, but the rear doors present another problem. They mounted easily to the door panel, but the diameter of the Boston Acostics magnet is about 1/2 inch larger and it won't pass through the inner door sheet metal. I think the only solution is to enlarge the hole, but... Has anyone done this or have suggestions about using my Popeil pocket Sawzall on the door, or even a recommendation for different speakers. Thanks.

You're on the right track. Radial cuts into the periphery, then bend (hammer) the sheet metal back to make space. Did it last year on the spouse's '92 965. She sure was glad she'd bought me the Sawzall for Christmas.

Jim,

I just got done cramming some 6.5 MB Quart component units in the front doors of my 945T. The magnets on these are HUGE, so some cutting was in order.

Do I understand correctly that you have a little Sawzall? That would be slick. I used a smaller hack saw to cut three notches, then simply hammered/folded the offending metal out of the way. I'm not sure how the metal in the rear is configured (I left them stock, they will only be used if rear seat passengers complain) but if you only have a half inch to remove it should be a piece of cake.

Have fun with your new tunes! BTW, nice collection of rides....I wish my 945T had an M46...someday.

Thanks for the info - no, Popiel doesn't (or anyone else, for that matter) make a miniature sawzall, but I'm fairly competent with a hand jig saw. Its still the bending and hammering that throws me, but for good sound ...

The 744T/M46 is amazingly fast for a brick. Boge TurboGas, 25mm bars, Cherry tower brace and IPD lower brace, front (only) lowering springs, 2.5inch cat back exhaust, and if I can get good instructions, I'm installing a turbo+ kit (from eBay) and leather seats from a 760.. It gets a consistent 25.5 at 75mph. Oh yes, Alpine head, Boston front Polk rear speakers, Hafler amp and 10" subwoofer. Sorry, I got carried away...
