MYSTERY SPEEDOMETER 200

I HAD AN ERRATIC SPEEDOMETER AND UPON THE CAR DRIVING THROUGH A SERIOUS PUDDLE OF WATER IT NOW IS WORKING ....1988 240....ANY THOUGHTS

If I understand the issue correctly, the speedometer sensor is located on the differential, mid-axle and it may be that the splash of water provided enough wiggling of the contact to better seat the sensor, or wiggled it enough to provide a better, although temporary, connection. You might drive the car up on ramps (rear up), safely though! and take the sensor off and clean the contacts. You will likely then have a good working speedometer for a much greater lenght of time.

Well you can't expect a speedometer to work properly if it is dehydrated!
