Re PAIR system questions 07/27/04

97 Volvo, 175,000 mi., DTC 442 & DTC 446: Air injection pump OK. Solenoid in Fuse Box OK. How do you test or check cannister purge valve? What is function of "Pierburg" device mounted below purge valve? How do you check or test air pump solenoid valve? Engine runs OK, but check engine light has now been on over three years, even though passed state inspection OK after check engine light disabled last year. Any info or help greatly appreciated.

Re PAIR system questions 07/27/04

The evap system is completely separate from the air injectyion system. Your DTC's only concern the former. Check for hose leaks and gas cap first. As with any solonoid operated valve you can easily disconnect and check for continuity or apply 12V direct to see if it operates. There are 2 valves in the system and on some models a pressure semsor in tank.
