In recent months, there have been several questions about the A/C system's oil capacity (e.g. compressor capacity, dryer/accumulator capacity) on the 960/90 series Volvos.
I came across the following information today.
Apparently these cars came with the possibility of two different compressors from the factory.
Sanden 7D-7H15 7 cylinder compressor
or, the
Zexel DKS-15Ch 6 cylinder compressor
(note : our 95, 960 has the Zexel compressor (but it was replaced by our Indy a few years ago and the original was a Sanden). Our 98 S90 has the Sanden compressor.
Systems with both compressors take exactly 31.7 ounces of R134a.
Total System PAG oil capacity :
for the Sanden is 8.5 oz., and,
7.1 oz. for the Zexel equipped system.
If any component is removed and replaced, the following amount of PAG oil should be added to the system for the ZEXEL systems:
Compressor (same as amount removed from old compressor OR 2.4 oz. Minimum)
Condensor 0.7 oz.
Evaporator 1.7 oz.
Accumulator/Dryer 3.0 oz.
Lines 0.7 oz
NOTE :
Even though this document says these numbers are for the ZEXEL system (7.1 oz. system capacity), the total adds up to 8.5 oz. which is the spec. for the Sanden system. I can't explain the discrepency, but this is how it is written up in the Volvo document.
Information wasn't available for the Sanden based system at the time of printing, but since all the components are the same except for the Compressor, you can make some pretty good assumptions.
I hope this information helps now that there is so much work being done on Volvo A/C sytems.
