Used M47 200 1987

Anything I should look for in a used M47? Mine has the countershaft rattle and I'm looking for one to replace it. Hmm, to make the clear is there anything I can inspect on the transmission, or it it just pull and pray that the internals are good?

Just a few months ago, I had to replace my M47-II. The counteshaft made a hole in the rear of the tranny. It is a little expensive, but they do come with a 12 month warranty and offer a lifetime warranty on the transmission.

Make sure while you are in there, do a complete clutch job, throwout bearing, guide bearing, cable, etc.. and use only Redline MTL.

    Hi Neil,

    What is the countershaft rattle?

Thanks in advance for "educating" me on this.

      It's pretty well described here:
      http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/TransmissionManual.htm#M475SpeedNoiseinGearBearingsBad

Basically a sort of rattling/moaning noise in every gear except 4th, most likely from a bearing on the countershaft.

I have been looking at replacing mine since the shifting is a bit heavy (worn sycros). I cannot see why a 940 M47 would not work. You might need swap over the linkage etc. Normally improvements are made as years go by. The later the box the better. 940 M47 was made till 95 or so...

Let us know how you get on.

    Reg,

    Jorn
