Air Cond noise 700 1991

I have a noise which appears to come from the AC clutch area. It is a humming/whirring type sound, not terribly loud and only when idling with the AC on. A slight bit of gas pedal makes it disappear. Turning off the AC stops it also. I can't issolate it to the clutch, pulley, belt or compressor. The AC works fine, even in this hot texas summer. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
Gary TX

May be lack of sufficient oil in the compressor. Put a 2 oz. oil charge (which you can buy at Autozone, etc.) in the system and see if the noise diminishes.

If that doesn't work, then I'd guess its the clutch bearing.

The AC was supposedly checked for levels etc. before I bought it... I'm thinking it's the clutch... Any idea how expensive to replace? I believe it requires special tools and pressing it on and off, so I don't want to tackle it. Thanks for the replies
