electrical oddities 200

My '86 240 wagon has been acting strange as of late. Some days the rear window de-fogger comes on by itself and won't go off until you cut the ignition off....hummm other days, when I stop the eat lunch, and sit in the car, the radio won't work, unless the car is running, sometimes it works with key on acc. On hot days when I have the A/C on I can drive 15-20 miles and the engine will develope a miss, and run poorly. Is all this something I can fix or do I need to look for another car? Thanks

I'd start with monitoring the voltage at the device itself and then move along the circuit to each switch and fuse till finally the battery itself. This will isolate the problem. Also check each ground for the devices and any associated with the switches.

Unplug and re-seat each connector in the circuit also.

Worn ignition switch sounds like the culprit. If you wiggle the key around, see if that helps any in creating or eliminating the problem.

iPd sells replacement switches. Not hard work - just a bear to get to. Pull the connector, and two screws removes the switch off the back of the lock.

Defogger might be because of worn wires at the hinges, shorting with one another.
