Hi All,
Our trust 1987 765T 215,000 was pronounced with a bad head gasket today by our Indy mechanic. I am choosing not to fix it. What is the best way to sell it? Will auto recyclers give you anything for it if it has alot of good parts on it. Our wagon has been well taken care of. It has fairly new tires, a new transmission, new alternator, newer radiator, new auto climate control, IPD sway bars, center crossbar, full Hella Ecode headlights, etc.
Appreciate your ideas :)

I just did my 86 240's head gasket and it was no small job. it was around $400 in parts and machine work and took me several days after work maybe (15hours) to put the thing back together. If you need head work you will wnat to do a valve job...then u have to reinstall the cam...spec out the valve lash and cam jurnals and then there is the fun of the timing belt to look forward to. As for not overheating engines....last i checked that was the most common cause of head gasket failure ....I really doubt this is a case of super high boost or some other obscure problem...This is all without tracking down the source of the problem to begin with. Maybe you could pop in a lower milage used motor?

I had to redo my head on the 92 745t - from overheating. It run good and hot - warped the head. The machinists shop that did the work on the head did all the work that partained to cam/valves. All I had to do was put it back on. He did not have to replace any valves (thank God) - but he did put new guides in and all the related hardware.

as long as the motor hasn't overheated ... a headgasket repair is maybe $40 worth of parts and a few hours of time.
10 mins to remove intake. 40 mins to remove turbo and exhaust. 5 mins to remove head bolts, pull off head ... throw on new gasket and just tighten it up.
done this w/ many a friends cars and have never had any probs. the gasket itself costs $12. if you wanted te full elring kit its only $40 w/ the new intake and exhaust gaskets.
i overheated my 91's motor a few times and never had to pull the head because everything was ok and has been, compression was always perfect.
where abouts are you because w/ all those good parts it would be much better to sell the car as a whole to another volvo guy that can reuse them because a auto wrecker will give ya $500 and trash the car and everything on/in it if they don't care about it

That's a bad idea to fix the a blown head gasket in that manner if you're prepping a car for sale. I'd surely go back and raise quite a stink if it ever failed.
Realistically doing it yourself, the proper way, is still significantly cheaper than paying someone to do it. Checking to make sure the head is true, pressure testing the head, cleaning it, etc.

Isn't installing a $12 gasket and maybe fixing the problem better than paying a machine shop $200 to tell you its ok, then still having to buy the gasket and do the work?>

I've never seen an overheated engine that was OK. The head is always warped. In light of all the labor involved, another $80-150 or whatever the shop gets to true it up is well worth it.
Then you know the jobs done right, and good for the NEXT 215K.

The original post didn't mention that it was overheated - just that it had a bad head gasket. Such can occur simply from age too - not every car is made exactly as perfectly as another, y'know.
But anyways, as for overheating ... I don't think thelostartof was talking about the typical melt/warp/blow-a-headgasket stage. When the car's temperature is above normal, it's can be considered "overheating" already. Kept in check soon enough, it's fine.

The 700 series cars have such heavily compensated gauges, the operator may not realize the car has been overheated.
Anyways, yes I would much rather take the head to a machine shop. They'll do a much better job of cleaning the head up as well.. with less potential for damage. Hot tanking the thing is much safer than a razor and gasket cleaner on an aluminum surface.

Yep - that's all a junkyard will give. If you got a good junkyard, the $50 will be after they deduct for towing and environmental fees.
Back to the original poster ... take the advice to fix it. Then decide if you want to sell it. As it is now, you're not going to get much money unless it's to an enthusiast nearby, and even then, you're not likely to get near as much $$ as it's worth.

I think with all the new things you have on it, you ought to get the head gasket fixed.
