overdrive problem 200

I have an 82' 245 turbo with an M46 and the overdrive will only stay on when you hold the button down. The lady that i got the car from said that she had to solder some wires back together when her boyfriend put the tranny in so she may have mixed something up. Any suggestions/similar experiences would be appreciated.

Thank You.

Strange - most likely a relay problem such that it is failing to latch-on when triggered by the switch.

Another possible explanation is that the rewiring/soldering may have connected the Brown wire from the gear lever OD switch to the Yellow wire to the solenoid, thus bypassing the OD relay and forcing the OD to engage anytime the switch is held on....very bad idea. A test of this is to see if the OD will operate in third gear.

Question

Volvodad, doesn't the OD come with a lockout that prevents it from engaging in lower gears? (I thought I read it somewhere on this board. I'm still trying to figure/find out why a relay was introduced after '80 to the M46.)

True - the 4th gear switch grounds a wire going to the relay (Red, to terminal 85) when the trans is in 4th. Without that ground, the relay (thus, OD) won't operate - no current to solenoid. That's the "lockout" - in the relay, not the OD unit itself.

But if someone bypassed the relay and fed 12V directly to the solenoid, it would force the OD to engage in whatever gear (including reverse...ouch$$).
