I have a '90 740 and the temperature gauge will work sometimes and sometimes not.
I have fiddled with the connection at the sensor on the engine block to no avail
Any ideas?

    Sounds to me like the actuall guage itself is sticking, pull the panal and pull the guage out and try squirting some silicone spray into the guage itself.
