Cruise control wiring question... 200 1986

I incorrectly pulled the wires out of the valve unit of the cruise control unit I got from the salvage yard and now I need to know whether I would screw things up if my wires are crossed.

basically there are three wires going into the "underhood" segment of the cruise control valve unit Y-R, Y-BN and W-R, I am certain I have the W-R correct (it is common to both valves, but I'm not sure which valve Y-R goes to and which valve Y-BN goes to.

so I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not I would cook the brains of my cruise control unit by supplying power to it with those two wires reversed?

3517400 is the number of the cruise "computer" unit I have and it came out of an '86 245...

since the wires go to supplying vacuum valves I can't see that their reversal would do anything other than cause the cruise control's function to be messed up..

anyone have any idea?... thanks,

jack

Cruise control wiring question... 200 1986

Hi Jack,

I just happened to have a unit like this in a box in the garage. Once you get the round cover off, hold the unit so the white valve is at 4-o'clock and the black valve is at 8-o'clock. Yellow-brown wire goes to the white valve connector closest to 3-o'clock. Yellow-red wire goes to black valve connector at 9-o'clock. Red-white wires go to the valve connectors closest to 6-o'clock.

I put a couple of wire-ties around the cable just inside where it comes through the side of the unit--that way any stress (pull) is taken up by these wire-ties and not the connectors.

Hope this works for you. If not, e-mail me and I'll try to take a picture and e-mail it back.

Regards,

Steve A-

exactly what I needed Steve thanks...

I'll make sure the wires are in the right place and then I'll know it's back to the "pre-removal" state I found it in at the junk yard, thanks!

I have a set at home that probably has the solution, and I'll take a look if it is not going to destroy it to look internally. I can look later if you want.

it wouldn't destroy anything to look, however if your set is installed on a car it will be a bit of a pain to disassemble it just to take a look. If the set is out of a car it would be a lot easier I think.

the smaller of the two "underhood" units contains the wiring... you must unbolt 3 bolts from it's bracket (without dropping the nuts or bolts into the netherworld) - then unscrew the small screws holding the flat plastic cover of the unit (again without dropping the small screws into the netherworld).

once inside you would see two valves (one should have a white plastic bottom and the other a black plastic bottom) my only question is which valve has the
Y-R wire going to it and which valve has the Y-BN wire going to it.

I would completely understand if you don't want to go through all this for me.

But this shouldn't destroy anything in your cruise control unit unless the bolts are rusted and might break... if that is the case than don't venture in there!

thanks for the consideration,

jack
