dead DL and a shady mechanic..... help? Anchorage AK 200 1985

I bought an '85 DL about a year and a half ago- it broke down after a few months and my mechanic, (a crazy volvo- lover who lives about 30 minutes away) looked at it, and decided that he would need to tow the car out to his house (AKA his shop). It turns out, that my mechanic had moved to a tiny little town three and-a-half HOURS away. After assessing the car, he told me it would be 1500 bucks to repair it, the same price I had payed for the car a few months earlier. My car has been sitting in his lot for the past 11 months or something. (its basically out in a field with his other 100 or so volvos- so he was always very friendly about me leaving it up there) I had been planning to sell the car to him for 100 bucks (sadly, because I'm still a bit in debt for that car) but not until I drove up there to take my stereo out. I got the stereo out a couple weeks ago- and decided while I was up there (with some support of the brickboard) to try to fix it and sell it- which brings me to question one: how much will I be able to sell this car for? the body is in good shape- a bit of rust around the rear wheel wells, but otherwise its a classy looking car- and once I fix it is should be very mechanically sound- but is it only worth 500 bucks? - on to question two. When I was visiting my car, it became apparent that my mechanic REALLY wanted to keep my car- and kept telling me to send him the title. when I suggested fixing it myself, he became very unfriendly, and seemed irritated. Of course, he doesn't want to tow my car the three and-a- half hours back to town. He told me most people do a free one way tow or something. but I kind of feel shafted because I didn't even know he was taking it so far, and he never gave me an estimate before he took it up there.- should I just go out there and pick it up my self/ or try to argue it out with him? thanks for your help.
ALSO- is there anyone in the Anchorage, AK area who might help me out with questions when I'm fixing my volvo?

Have him give you an itemized estimate of all that is wrong! Has to be alot considering the price. What did he tell you? We need the whole story to help. I mean you can bring in a car that has no start, and be quoted for everything it needs (bushings, motor mounts, wire harness, ect.) that adds up in the end. Post back with the specific problems you had initially with the car and the BB can help. B.G.

I know of an excellent Volvo mechanic, as of '97 though, and I thought that he was in the Anchorage area. John Alexa, the "Volvo Doctor" - 746-4883.

This has got to be a scam. Get your Brick back. The advice of contacting the local law would be a great thing to do. Also ask them if this has ever been reported before of this guy. He towed your car 3.5 hours without informing you of this? I do not know the laws where you live but here the wrecker operator muct inform the driver, or owner, of the destination and the charge for his services. And like everyone else that responded,,,What is wrong with the CAR??Did it just quit? Did the guy give you an itemized estimate ? Did you sign a contract about repair to the vehicle?? For $1500.00 you could almost have a complete engine/tranny exchange.

Sounds like a form of attempted auto theft to me.

I agree with the theft part.
It might be a good idea to talk to local law enforcement beforehand, in case the "mechanic" becomes unfriendlier when you go to retrieve you car. Doesn't sound like a very good situation. later, rcs

of course, before talking to local law enforcement in a small town, it's a good idea to do some research first and make sure he's not related .

Talking 8 - Just out of curiosity, what is wrong with the car. A $1500 repair for a 20 year old 240 is a huge amount of money. It sounds like he plans to repair the car himself for some spare change and a few parts from one of his wrecks. Your proposal to fix it yourself would change all that.

That said, 3.5 hour is one HE** of a tow! It would probably cost you a minimum of $200 for a one-way tow of that length. The tow is a real cost to your mechanic, and I can see why he wouldn't want to tow it back to your home. If you are able to fix the car yourself, you might want to offer to "reimburse" him at least something for his time and out-of-pocket expenses.

Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

He quoted you $1500? For what? What is the problem as he sees it? You can pay him for an hour or two for his diagnosis ( you really should, it seems the fair thing to do)and fix it yourself. Most likely his diagnosis will either be wrong or he won't tell you, 'cause sure as sh*t not too much cost $1500 to to fix.
