SU HIF6 needles 444-544

Can someone advise which needles should be used in twin SU HIF6 carburettors on a standard B20F engine when K&N filters are mounted? At this moment BAL needles are fitted, but the carbs came from a B20B (‘71 144) and that's not quite the same as a B20F.
Around 40-55 miles steady speed there is a slight hesitation, so it’s obvious these needles are not ideal.
A rolling road session would be the best way to determine of course, but also the most expensive....

Sounds more like a small vaccum leak. The BDJ was fitted to the B21 and is a leaner needle at low lift but the curve is much steeper to give a much richer mixture more quickly.

From the experience of others having good results with the BAL and the sound of your symptoms, I'd look for a leak first.

You may also have worn jets or needle (biased needle) so replacing them with new "stock" units may be advantageous.

What sorta mileage are you getting? Sounds like it may be a bit lean...

But, I'm with George.make sure everything else is in perfect order before you start messing with different bits. Volvos have never seemed picky about their SU needles in my experience... Of course, that wouldn't be the case in a serious balls out race application, but I don't think thats the case here.

The only other needles, besides the BAL ,listed for a B20 series motor with HIF6's in my 1975 edition of 'Tuning SU Carburetters' book is the BBB needle for the 72 and later B20B and the BBZ for the 72 B20D LHD. Hope this helps.

I'd make sure the carbs are in top shape and the seals good, mixture correct
etc. There is just not that much difference between needles compared to the
difference of getting rid of leaks and getting the mixture right. I've been
using BALs on a B20F and a B30E, both with IPD 7001 cam and they are working
    great.
