The Brick needs a little more speed 200 1987

What are some easy ways to add a little speed to my volvo.
It is a '87 w/b230f and a AW70.
I don't have lots of money or I would do a turbo swap.
right now the car is completely stock and I would like a better 0-60 times.
any tips or trick would good.

I think one of the cheapest and easiest ways to increase performance is through a high perf cam. IPD's turbo cam is a cross between the turbo and NA versions of the fabled Enem V15 (a.k.a. Unitek Phase 1) cam. And it's about a hundred bucks cheaper than ordering the cam from Sweden.

By all means, that's the way I'd go even on an NA motor.

Of course, I agree with Greg's comments. Get everything functioning properly first. Then start bolting on some goodies.

Increasing power, changing ratios and improving aerodynamics are all expensive. The cheapest way to get a faster car is to cut the weight down. Removing bits is free, and you might even be able to sell them.

Every 50kg or so you can strip out is supposedly worth 1/10 of a second in the quarter, and there's an awful lot of stuff you can live without.

Here's a recipie for getting a 740 down to race weight, lots of this should work with a 240 as well. Obviously you can't do stuff like removing your license plates on a road car, but you might be interested in some of this.

Put tiny little tires on it to reduce the effective gear ratio. This would give you a little performance if you could stand the side effects :-D

You could also look at an IPD-VX cam. This will help...but don't expect it to be what anyone would consider "fast"

im doing this too. although im probably going to add turbo as well. mines an 86 240gl b230f. the first step is to clean everything REALLY well, and make sure your wire harness is good. start by getting it all tuned up really nicely, THEN start thinking about mods for increased horsepower. cleaning out the intake and throttle body will probably restore a lot of zip if yours is as dirty as mine was. also, make sure vacuum hoses are good because that could make the air/fuel mix slightly off resulting in crappy performance. i think the first thing im doing is getting a new camshaft. the one off the turbos are supposed to be an improvement, but ipd sells an even cooler one. if you want to risk ruining your stuff you could port your head. go to turbobricks.com and look under articles to figure out how. it will definitely help, but could render your car undrivable if its not tuned up properly beforehand. either clean your fuel injectors physically (with a flow bench or mechanic who has one) or run a crapload of techron through your system. get a larger diameter exhaust system. that will definitely improve things and if you do a bit of it yourself could be fairly cheap. anyway, i'd say definitely get it running really smoothly first, then start improving on the clean slate. good luck.

Do everything Greg said. Also, Make sure you warmed air flap in your air filter housing is not allowing hot air in except in cold weather. Better yet, rip it out along with the metal hose to the exhaust manufold - cold air mod. This will also save your AMM from premature failure. Mine runs just fine in winter breathing only cold, dense air. A little rough when first started up at -2degF but smooths out as it warmes up.

Doing a turbo would be great, but there is a guy on turbobricks.org who ramboed a supercharger from a junk yard into his 240. Look for a user there named Blown240. He has been increasing the boost and going with larger injectors but his original configuration worked well with the stock injectors at 5 or 7 psi. Look for his posts from around Jan'04.

Great suggestion! I guess I never really thought about Volvos being rather slow. Volvos handle well, are comfortable, safe, easy to work on, and fun to drive. As you say, if I had wanted a fast car, I guess I would have looked at something else! But, then I did recently see an '82 242 with a 5.0 Mustang under the hood . . . WAY COOL!
