After the timing belt 900

Finished the T belt, all went well with that. Decided to change the oil, since I was in the area. Left the house to get oil. I had drained oil, already had a a filter. So i Buttoned everything up, but left the hood barely open. Get home and car is gone...wife decided to go about a mile down the road to see a freind. Can you say livid????? Would a short distance like this cause any harm? If so how will it manifest itself?

I remember my old independant volvo mechanic telling the story about the customer who drove her car in about five miles without any oil.

No harm done... according to that story at least.

Ouch! that's about a mile each way...maybe nothing happened, espcially if you're running synthetic. What ever damage was done, it's done. I'd fill it up and drive it for a while, but not at high sperds, and see if you find any symptoms...oil loss? I don't know exactly what you should expect if the car returned safely home. Wonder if a thin viscosity help in the initial fill?

not using synthetics. Castrol 10 40. I change the oil too often to use synthetics. Any idea what symptom I might see and how many miles later should they arise?? Thanks

"I change the oil too often to use synthetics"

Can you explain what you mean by this?

I change the oil every month on both vehicles at the same time. I never hit more than 1800 to 2000 miles on the volvo but regularly hit 3 to 4 K on mine. Changing oil at this interval, I am still getiing good protection, but to change this often using synthetics would be cost prohibitive. Not that synthetics arn't good, for my situation I use Castrol 10-40 every month. 132K on the clock and the dip stick is always clean, except for some mayby metal shavings!!!!

Hi John, If it doesn't happen right away you have lucked out. One shot on the highway for less than ten minutes will tell you if major bearing damage has happened. Oil light will come on at idle.

Holy Mackrel! She didn't see the oil light? Its pretty bright. Did she drive it back? I can positively say that if the oil was not synthetic, you could have bearing flake. Add your new oil and drive it normal for a couple days. change your oil and filter again. You are using the Mann filters right? Find out where your Amsoil dealer is and bring him a 8OZ. sample of oil from your drain plug. Send the oil out for analysis(sp). Cross your fingers. You have learned a valuable lesson. Never ever, ever, leave a car with no oil in it without first disabling the ignition system. I have lost two engines for the same reason. I hate that sinking feeling. I sure hope everything is fine. Pauli
