Entire exhaust off car...what else to do? 200 1993

OK....One thing leads to the next. I had posted earlier about replacing my head pipe:

http://brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=832735

Turns out that I will now be ordering a catylic converter as well. Getting the studs out of the old one is beyond my abilities/tools/patience. Right now the entire exhaust is removed from the car from head pipe to tail pipe. I will probably be replacing from the cat back too so it's all new at the same time and I don't end up in the "replace an exhaust part of the month club."

Anyway...now that the exhaust is out, is there anything else I should consider doing. For example, does it make sense to mess with the exhaust manifold gaskets? Nothing is leaking right now as far as I know. (I had one leak on a previous 240 and it make a distictive CHA CHA CHA sound. Don't have anything like that) Messing with these could be a significant nightmare and I've had enough of a nightmare already. However, if it make sense to do it, please let me know.

Exhausted,

Ted

Before you put the exhaust system back in, take it for a drive around the block with just the exhaust manifold bolted up. Depending on how you value your relationship with your neighbours, you may want to do this during the day.

Why? 200 1993

Does this do something to help, or just for fun? I am having exhaust problems myself, and that is something I did not do. I wonder if I should have,

Joe

Hmmm, I think I'm going to have to start putting disclaimers on my posts, just so people know which ones are meant to be serious.

I don't see any practical value in driving your car with the exhuast system removed, it would just make noise and air polution. The motor does sound awesome blowing straight out the headers though, which is why I suggested you might like to try it, just to frighten small children and animals as you pass.

Definately not recomended it quiet middle class suburbs at, say, three AM.

I had to do what ended up being a replacement that included header pipe, cat, and entire cat back exhaust on a '87 240 not too long ago. The exhaust was rusting out, the heat shields were coming off the header pipe, and the cat was breaking apart and created a near-stall condition. After checking around, I ended up purchasing header from FCPGroton (Bosal), cat from Autozone (Bosal), and the cat back exhaust system from Volvo dealer. Volvo's exhaust system is considered high quality and the price was competitive. Bosal, I understand, is OEM for Volvo. I didn't touch the exhaust manifold. Don't forget proper gaskets, fasteners, washers, clamps, etc. Not all came with the exhaust parts, particularly for installing the header pipe and cat. In my case, I remember a couple of trips to the auto parts store during installation because this or that bolt was the wrong length, etc; very inconvienient and made the job take longer than necessary. If I remember right, I needed a donut type gasket for the flange fitting at back of the header pipe and front pipe to cat. Autozone's cat comes with the front and and back pipes already attached. I used a heat resistance antisieze at all fittings and set all fittings at proper torque. I think Bentley's has all the torque values. Good luck; I hope this information helpful and not too basic.

Before you order that cat online, you might want to check with AutoZone. My local 'Zone gets $99 for the cat, with a lifetime warranty. If you don't have a local store, you can order it online and they'll ship it for free.

I tried calling them earlier today, but they didn't pick up the phone. I also tried NAPA. They have a universal cat for only $59.95. Yeee Ha

Thanks, will check it out online. Compared to the dealer price, *everything* seems cheap.

I never bother calling AutoZone, it just pisses me off. I check the prices online, then go in and order the parts in person.

BTW, I actually used the warranty on the cat on my wife's Geo Metro convertible. I replaced it and the complete exhaust system, and a year later the muffler rusted out. When I went in to order the warranty replacement, they let me exchange the cat as well without any hassle.
