Greasy black little 1/4' gobs of filter coming from all vents

My 1995 940 wagon, in Saint Paul, MN, 103K just started blowing black little gobs of filter like material when I turned on the air conditioning. I didn't notice it till I tried wiping a little gob off my shirt. It smeared. I vacuumed up the rest. It looks and feels like dirty oil. The air conditioning works fine otherwise. I'm guessing the only way for it to get oily in there is a leaky evaporator.
I have the green manual and parts manual and don't see how any dirty oil could get in there otherwise. Or for that matter what would cause the filter to disintigrate like that, if thats what happened. But if there are any other ideas before I start taking it apart and ordering parts I would appreciate thoughts. I've learned to ask before I take things apart finally :) And if I do have to take airbox apart are there things I should do as preventitive maintenance or early repairs? And thanks for those tips on assembling in the FAQ. And all your help in general.
Thanks for the thoughts.
Bill

Greasy black little 1/4' gobs of filter coming from all vents

Had the same issue in my '93 944 turbo. I think someone mentioned that it is HVAC gasketing material/foam that just breaks down and flies out. It is a mess though. I took a vacumm cleaner with a brush attachment to my vents and sucked as much as I could out. There does seem to be an end to the amount that flies out. Haven't had the issue since.

The stuff just breaks down in a messy way and smears.

Mike

Greasy black little 1/4' gobs of filter coming from all vents

A little more information. A flouescent die was introduced when a part of a can of 134 was added maybe a year ago. The filter-like black ucky stuff does not floures under a 50 watt black light using yellow glasses. Nor does the inside of the ducts anywhere. I have had the car for a little over a year. Previous owner didn't remember any a/c work. She was the second owner. With an amient temperature of 92 the car blows 35 degree air on low "1", and goes up incrementally to 60 degree on high "5." Any ideas on if it was the filter what would make it decompose like that? As you can imagine passengers are a bit annoyed at the black spots these little presents are leaving on their clothes.
Thanks for the thoughts.
Bill
