740T ex mani R&R cost 700

I have a 740T Auto (168K) with loosened turbo bolts- allowing a gap of maybe less than 1/32" (prob a 64th) between the mani and the turbo housing. I wanted to do the work myself, but have run into a lot of warnings about stud breakage probs. I have decent mechanical skills and am not afraid to undertake the job, but I am concerned about something going wrong, like a stud breaking, that would escalate into trips to a machine shop, downtime for the car, and time put in that I don't have to spare. BTW, I have found some of the ex mani nuts have loosened.

So I am considering taking the car to a mechanic I know who has plenty of Volvo exprience. Does anyone have an idea of what the rate for this repair would be?

And am I being overly concerned about potential problems? If so, should I get all the parts from Volvo?

Thanks

Rick

    Well I replaced my turbo without incident. This of course is not to say you won't. However, I would think that if you spray studs with PB blaster, let it set for 30 minutes and then try to loosen or tighten, you'll have an good indication if you are going to run into problems.

      Thanks for the encouragement. I can at least do that. Any idea of the total parts cost?

        I changed my turbo too with out any problems. I have another car so could soak the studs for a long time (a week +) Some of the studs came out with the nuts stuck to them. I replaced these studs. I used all new nuts. And new gaskets, washers and the oil filter adapter o-ring.

        studs = $8
        exhaust manifold gasket set= $12 (get a good set)[not auto zone , etc]
        nuts = $1
        the other gaskets and washers were a buck or so.
        The oil feed pipe was $40 something. The turbo rebuilder insisted on a new one.
        Studs that hold the exhaust down pipe flange = $12
        Bolt that holds the turbo to manifold = $25! Mine is a '88 740, later years ('90+ ?) used studs and nuts.
        Use plenty of anti-sieze.

        I got all my parts from Swedish Engineering, a board sponsor. They are good at telling you when you must use Volvo labled stuff and not. They discount Volvo labled parts.

        That was when Phillip worked there. He is now with another outfit. (770 509-7900) Sorry i can't find the 800 # or websight address. Same setup- a Volvo repair shop that sells parts and knows what works. (Professional Swedish Car Repair). Each place has excellent service.

        Good luck,
        chuck
