Control arm bushings in the driveway? 200

could i do this in the driveway? Or do i need to take it to a lift and get the whole car up int he air? I have heavy hammers and a nice full set of chisels and punches...i think it can be done but wanted to see if anyone else here has done it...

The controls arms can be removed in the driveway but if a hoist is available, why not make your life easier. A hydralic press is needed to push out the old bushings (not an arbor press). The trickest part of pressing out the old bushings is supporting the control arm so the bushing is square to the press ram. A socket, with a diameter large enough to bear on the steel bushing sleeve (not the rubber) and yet small enough to go through the hole, can be used between the ram and bushing. Be sure the new bushings are oriented correctly when pressing them in (slots are horizontal). With the control arms out, it's a great time to remove and inspect the ball joints. jp

It sounds like you've been working your way down through the front suspension. I did the same thing starting with the strut bearings and inserts. Then I moved on to the trailing arm bushings in the rear. Let us know how you fair on the control arm bushings. Good luck. jp

That's where I did mine. A good set of jackstands, a press, or access to one are necessary.

I think using hammers and chisels are do-able, but you run the risk of ovaling your large bushing hole, resulting in a lot of clunking. Also, improper force on the bushings could ruin them, leaving you no better off.

I took mine to a shop them first time, and contrary to my instructions, the guy torched and beat them out, and hammered them back in, because he did know how to use the owner's press.

Later on when I re-replaced them with a press, them still clunked. I took them to a independant Volvo Tech (Thanks Trans Tech in Oak Ridge) would told me he housings had ovaled, and needed replacing.
