Driving with AC belt removed 900

Have a distinctive noise coming from AC compressor - drive belt seems ok, so could be compressor itself or clutch. It's going to be a couple of weeks before I can get it looked at; so can I remove the drive belt to stop it turning and prevent any further damage? Is this recommended?

940, sure, no problem, had to do this myself several months ago.
