Transmission overdrive 900

Hi all,
The '92 940T (auto) has an overdrive button on the shifter that lights up an arrow on the instrument cluster when the o/d is locked out. Mine has started to come on occassionally when I start up the car and operating the button doesn't turn it off. After a while of driving and operating the button it goes out. The transmission shifts OK and the fluid is OK (although I probably should get a fluid flush soon). It seems to happen most during hot weather but I'm not sure about that connection. Anybody ever encounter this problem and what it could mean? I hope it doesn't indicate pssible transmission problems. The car is high mileage but mostly highway so it doesn't show it.

By the details in your description it almost certainly the OD relay, not the switch. Easy fix, replace or it resolder it. All details in the FAQ's

Thanks Henry. I thought about the switch on the shifter not making contact. Anything has got to be better than a transmission problem and as long as it works OK I'll be happy.

Dear Rick,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. Might I suggest checking the relay first. These typically fail far more often than does the switch on the tranny shift lever.

The relays are located behind the fuses, which are behind the front center console ashtray.

The overdrive relay is white, 1" square and 1.5" tall and is marked:
12V HELLA
German words
VOLVO
3523894
Made in Germany

It is located in the second row of relays, usually on the right (passenger) side of that row.

If you replace the relay, or re-solder it, and that does not solve the problem, post again.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

spook

It's most likely an electrical problem. I'd check the relay first. Also could be the button on the gear shifter or the wiring. I would recommend looking in the 740 FAQ for more information and suggestions.

Good luck,
Henry
