emissions test for 1988 Volvo 740GLE 700 1988

My 1988 Volvo 740GLE failed the emission test for NOx (standard: 3; test reading: 4.45). It passed the emission test for HC and CO.

Any suggestions for correcting this problem other than purchasing a new catalytic converter. Similar to the suggestion for 240 models, can a hose be plugged in 740's to prevent the NOx problem?

a high nox is caused by high combustion temp. a bad egr valve a vacuumn leak could be the culprit.
