Failed emissions....curious about something.... 200

Well, I took my 89 244 through NJ inspection today, and here are the results:

NOX

Standard: 1273 Reading: 3538 (FAIL)

HC

Standard: 167 Reading: 168 (!!) (FAIL)

CO%

Standard: 0.94 Reading: 0.70 (PASS)

What would cause my NOX readings to be that high? I didn't add any of that G2P stuff in my tank, nor did I any other kind of additives. I just took the car through as-is.

And just as a bit of insult to injury, it also failed for a burned-out brake light. Odd, as the light was functioning just fine as I sat on the hour and change line to get the car inspected.

So, folks...should I spend the money, and get the car fixed (I'm almost afraid to see how much this is going to cost me...and in NJ, you must have your car repaired by either a certified emissions tech, or you can fix it yourself--but either way, you must provide every last receipt, proving that you did fix the car), or should I just go to my friendly "mob garage", and purchase an inspection sticker for $100.00? I'm leaning more towards the latter option, since I don't feel like dunking a billion dollars into fixing my emissions system---as we all know, factories and trucks are the gross polluters--not our cars!

Let me know!!!

Thanks,

Steve

That's not to say that you can't, say, replace parts with junkyard
parts and provide a receipt for new spark plugs (as long as the
car passes emmissions next test :) Providing receipts is, I think,
more of a way of the state tracking repair costs rather than a way
of forcing the owner to prove that the repairs were done.

I dont know alot about volvos, but a fair amount about smog, some older volvos dont have one, but if your car has a egr valve and sys is plugged or partically clogged nox will go thur the roof. If you have a egr valve and you have a vacuum pump tool hook it up to the egr where vac line connects apply vac to egr. 1 it should vac pressure or egr valve is bad, 2.turn on car apply vac, rpms shoud drop about 700 rpm or stall, if not system is pluged.

I searched that article high and low, and found nothing about what would cause my NOX readings to be that high. Most of the stuff on that page concerned whether the car was running poorly, stalling, stumbling and all that happy stuff---and my car runs great. I've had no stalling or hesitation problems with it, nor does it feel sluggish (well, for a 240 that is...lol).

Is this the first time you attempted to pass inspection? Sounds like
a bad catalytic converter. Where do you live in New Jersey ? I know a mechanic who is also holds a certified inspecton licence. He only does
Volvo. My estimate of cost to correct would be around $320 including the
$89 fee for private state inspection.

To Mulata: I'm going to keep your mechanic friend in mind----especially if that mob sticker isn't..umm...real (lol). And yes, this IS the first time that I've tried to take the car through inspection. I did what I was supposed to do, too---drove the car around for an hour or so, made sure the tank was full, and when I purchased the car (end of July), it had a fresh oil change. I didn't realize a bad cat could cause those readings...

To Walrus3: The ONLY...and I mean ONLY reason I'm still in Jersey, is a sick older brother. Otherwise, if all were well with him, I'd be in Nebraska!
