960 -96 Strange running and 'lambda?'-light on dash? help! 900

I just bought this 960 -96 B6304(S?) last week from a dealer and earlier today sitting in a line the engine almost died while running at a standstill. But it recovered from maybe 200rpm and warped to 2000rpm for a second. I thought no more about it but on my way home this evening the "lambda" light suddenly appeared on the left in the dash, I have no clue what this symbol means but a friend who understood some german (my 960-manual is on german) said it was something about engine electronics/control and that I should seek a volvo-mechanic as soon as possible.
I checked fuses and wireing that I could see in the enginecompartment but I con't not see anything abnormal.

Now the engine feels like its loosing power sometimes and almost cuts power completely. What could it be? I haven't much experience of this engine yet, just upgraded from a 760 -88.

And by the way, is it possible to pull the errorcodes by myself without special equipment/instruments? If so, where? (pictures if possible)
God damn I miss my Haynes service handbook I had to my 760.

I built a simple diod-resistor testlight for the B280F engine on my old 760, and I guess that on the 960 there should be some built-in system for checking errorcodes?

Any ideas? What have happened? Help!

I had the same problem. Replaced the fuel filter and all is well.

You HAVE TO get the codes read as the first step. 900

In the states a "generic" OBD-II code reader is about $100 and if you have any desire to DIY repairs it is a necessity. You need to see what the code is before you do anything else. Once you tell us what the code is we probably can give you some direction. You could literally spend thousands of dollars replacing the wrong parts if you don't get a good diagnosis first.

Both of these events could be related. Yes, you need on OBD II reader to retrieve the codes and reset. But, with a little luck you could just have a simple vacuum leak, check under the hood for any hoses that came unplugged or some fittings that may have degraded, espesially the rubber elbows on the ends of the vacuum hoses. In the FAQ there is information on the vacuum motors that change the vent settings, but this seems to happen to earlier models more often. You need to get the codes pulled to help diagnose.

hm, I read in the FAQ that if I accelerate hard with the A/C running at full the vents should not stop blowing with full strength. But it feels like it looses airpressure from the vents when accelerating hard but comes back when I soften my foot on the gaspedal.

    Could this be my problem?
What does a vacuum-leak do to the engine? And where could I check for obvious leaks? And how? I read in some other post of using propane, water and WD40. Seems crazy to me. How can you see something that sucks instead of blows? (yeah yeah, very funny! ;D)

damnit, not even a week. God damnit. I have such luck with cars.
    ...

Any help on this problem..., well. I would like to have it fixed. Thats all.
