Oil supply line to turbo 700

Hello.

I am replacing the Mitsubishi turbo, TD-05, in my sons’ 1987 740 Turbo. Have already received the rebuilt back from Turbo City ($282 + shipping) and must now replace the oil supply line before re-installing the turbo/manifold.

After removing the old oil supply line, I am having trouble getting the new one bolted to the block because it is such a tight squeeze.

My questions:

First, do I need to remove or loosen the oil filter adaptor to complete my task?

Second, if I loosen this adaptor, will I need to replace the o-ring between the adaptor and the block? I'm afraid that I'll introduce an oil leak if I break this seal without replacing the o-ring(s).

Finally, does anyone have another suggestions for getting this supply line re-connected?

Thanks in advance.

Oil supply line to turbo 700

Good evening,

I did this job last winter on my 1988 745.

I lossened the oil filter adapter to change the o-ring. It's a good idea with engines this old. The old o-ring gets hard and is easier to change with the turbo out of the way.

I put the manifold/turbo unit on the head, then mounted the feed pipe, then replaced the oil filter adapter.

I used all new washers, gaskets and manifold nuts. Fill the turbo with fresh oil and before starting the engine crank it with the turbo feed line bolt loose untill you see oil coming out , then tighten the feed line bolt.

Use anti seize- hopefully there won't be a next time but you never know.

Check the FAQ's too for lots of good info.

good luck,
chuck

Oil supply line to turbo 700

Thanks Chucklee,

If I understand you correctly, it is necessary to remove the oil filter adaptor in order to attach the oil supply line to the block.

And since the adaptor is removed/loosened from the block, I'll need to replace the o-ring between the block and adaptor.

I appreciate all the advice.

Regards,
Earl

Oil supply line to turbo 700

Earl,

I looked at the oil feed line on my engine from the top. It disappears behind the oil filter adapter. I'm thinking my problem was getting a wrench on the oil line bolt with the oil filter adapter in place.

If you were able to remove the old oil line with the oil filter adapter in place, I guess it can be put back. I'd change that O-ring anyway. Unless you know it's only a year or two old.

My turbo rebuilder insisted on a new oil feed line.

Good luck- let me know if you get stuck and I'll look up from the bottom and try to remember a little more.

Oil supply line to turbo 700 1987

Chuck,

Thanks again for your help. You gave enough information for me to re-attach the oil supply line to the block without removing the oil filter adaptor. What I needed were smaller fingers, so I put a couple of sons to work...

We got the turbo/manifold combo bolted back into place, realized that we'd left off the heat shields so had to back up and try again. But the hardest part is now behind us. Tomorrow eve we'll add oil, hook up a few remaining hoses, and top of the coolant. Then I hope we can celebrate the completion of a terrific family project.

This has been a great learning experience, since I am not much of a do=it=yourselfer. My only other mechanical experience was to diagnose a 'no-start' problem on this vehicle which ultimately led to the replacement of the distributor. It's hard to beat the "I can do this" feeling that comes from the completion of a task like that.

Regards,
Earl

Earl & Sons,

Way to go! I hate to think what a Volvo or even an indy shop would have charged for this job. Now you guys will be able to do just about anything for your car.

Happy bricking,
Chuck

HI Earl,

>>>

I'm not sure it is necessary but the guys here and the FAQ,s said to change the oil filter adapter O-ring if it was at all old. Especially since you have better access with the turbo out of the way. I'm pretty sure I took mine apart like this: removed turbo from housing > removed manifold/housing from head > removed oil filter adapter nut > removed oil feed line (can't remember if you need to pull the oil filter adapter out of the way first but I think so. It's occouring to me that I forgot to fully tighten the block oil feed line bolt and had to loosen the filter adapter to get at it.)

So the short answer is yes. And hopefully you'll have one less oil leak with the new O-ring. There is one big O-ring behind the adapter. Volvo changed sizes at some point so make sure the parts guy knows what year you have. Might as well get a new crush washer for the big bolt while you're at it.

I'll go look at my engine and maybe I'll remember more about the job.

HAppy labor day,Chuck
