Front suspension 200 1980

When I turn to the right I get this clunking noise from the left front tire area. I had the wheel off and everything seemed to be tight. I changed the struts last year but I think it has something to do with them. If I hit a bump with the left wheel it sounds loose. the top nut is tight so what else could it be?

Have you done your control arm bushings recently?

Also, check to see that your sway bar mountings and end link bushings and grommets are tight. Check also that the cross member bolts (accessible from inside the engine compartment, down low, two on each side) are tight. Get under there with a 15mm and 17mm socket and tighten up everything you see related to steering & suspension. Often it's just a loose nut somewhere (I'm not talking about the one in the driver's seat).

    Bushings! 200 1980

That would be my first guess. As the bushings wear out(and sometimes dissappear completely), the suspension gets loose in its movement. The bushings are in the joints and dampen shocks, but when the bushing wears out and/or goes away completely, you're left with a suspension joint where the inner part just bounces around in the outer part, the area which is normally filled by a good bushing... Hope this helps, Peace,

      Bushings! 200 1980

I'll have a look at the front ones. The rear ones are fairly new. The front a arm bushings are origional. I was hoping I could get another 100k out them!!

300k on original bushing? Yeah I think that may be your problem. I just replaced mine last Monday (along with struts and shocks) and holy moly what a difference. All I want to do now is drive fast and make turns. No noise or stumbling feel around turns with bumps, just good solid feel and response. I took me about 1.5 hours to pull A-arms, about 2 hours to reinstall. Cost $61 at the shop for pressing new bushings in, Did both sets of bushings, would recomend the same for you unless your rear A-arm bushings are rather new. Mine looked OK when they were on the car, but when I pulled A-arm, I could see the other side of the rear bushings and that;s where the cracking rubber was.

        Good luck.

Could be a couple of things. Could be the ball joint, tie rod end(outer or inner), or it could be the strut cartridge is loose. The nut that holds the cartridge in could have backed out.

I checked the nut that holds the cartridge as the rubber cover has ripped and it looks OK. Would it need to be compressed to see if the nut is loose?
