Ray: May have a line on an '83 240 diesel in the Cleveland area. How much are you willing to spend, assuming car runs well, body needs some attention...you know, the usual old Swede problems? I'll see if I can hook up with the owner if you and he are in the same ballpark.

Brad, that sounds good as long as it's a manual tranny. I'm not looking for an under $1000 beater. Rather have a decent example I can work with to take it to the next level.

Ray: While I'm sure the owner would jump at the chance to take a lot of $ for his car, I'm not sure that this is what you're looking for. It's an automatic, kinda rusty, a little leaky, and I was going to offer the guy no more than about $500 for the thing, and am even having secong thoughts about that, seeing as I have a 122S project that's stalled. Actually I was looking for a winter car, while my van goes in for some body work. Give me a call later, if you want.

There is a buried post about 2 diesels to be given away for free in Wisconsin. Look in the 700 index for Friday at 8:32 with a header of Twin City(MN) Mechanic. vwhugger is his handle. He lives on the Wisconsin/Minnesota line on I94. Long haul from Cleveland, but two parts cars?

Found these two on www.bargainnews.com (CT/NY area.) I don't think they're manual trans cars though. Good luck with that.

The ZF auto is kind of notoriously fragile and difficult to fix. I believe they share gearboxes with '80s BMW 528E models. Don't know about other models, besides early 740GLEs that had that same transmission.

Texas is a wasteland for Volvos. And what there are, the prices are higher that what you're showing. And there's hardly a stick to be found.

Can't figure it out, because in the fantasy world of Texans, the pickup truck is God and Volvos are for sissies. People should be giving them away. But, no...

Maybe people in Tundra Land are afraid of rust?

good luck with that, they are pretty well known to suck big time. rebuild at 300,000 miles while the gas engine will do 500,000. famously unreliable diesel. Mercedes 300TD (80-87 ?) is much superior, or if you are feeling fancy mid seventies mercedes had a very simple straight 4 matched to a man tranny that should fit in a 240 without to much trouble.

After a long time of trying to find a 740td close enough to retrieve, I finally gave up and settled for a mercedes 300sd. it's comfy, but not fun to work on like a volvo diesel, and alot more things to go wrong on the car.

Yeah, I've had a Benz 240D. Wasn't a Volvo though, was it;) Thanks for your thoughts on the subject. I was aware they're not the best in class. Nevertheless, a straight six diesel could be sweet if rebuilt properly.
