CIS K jet-Stumble When Returning to Idle 200 1983

Hey dudes,

1983 244 Turbo (Not intercooled yet), 213k miles, CIS Kjet.

Whether I push in the clutch to come to a stop, or rev the engine in neutral, the engine will stumble really bad when comign back to idle. The rpms drop very low, so low that sometimes the oil pressure light will come on, as the gear driven oil pump doesn't spin fast enough due to lack of engine rpms.

Things I have checked:

Throttle Body and INtake are both clean
Idle Motor is clean, and valve rotates freely
Base idle is within specs at 900 rpm
New throttle body and intake gasket

Another symptom that may be related:

When the car is started and is is cool outside, I'd say about 60 or below fahrenheit (an estimate) the idle will 'hunt' between 1200 and 500 (judging from the in car tach). It will rev up and down between this rpm range about 8 times, then stop. I know it does this when the engine is cold, not positive when it is warmed up and then started.

I really need the help because ocassionally, about 5 times, the car has died while trying to return to idle, and thats not cool. Although now I do know how to popstart a car, really easy actually. Thanks for the help everyone!!

Smith

My 83 normally aspirated B23 idles at 900 and for the life of me I can't get it down to 750 either.

If you have no other problems you have to set the base idle to spec, then set the position switch to activate the CIS. It will only correct the idle 50 to 100 RPM's.

Correct base idle and mixture correct a host of problems and this is certainly one. Re-check it as per Bentley, not just the rpms.

Hey there, I do not have the bently manual. However, the Haynes has some useful information. When I grounded the blue/white connector to stop the idle motor, the engine died, and would not start. Only after I ungrounded it, idle motor working, would it idle. Is there something wrong with this? Also, mixture adjustment is done how? I know this is probably a pain for you, but I plan on getting a Bentley very soon.

Before jumping to the adjustments, make sure there are no vacuum leaks. This is just the sort of behavior my 83Ti exhibits with vacuum leaking past the rotten turbo outlet hose until I re-do the clamp. Also have a poor fit where the crankcase ventilation hose joins the intercooler plumbing -- anything between the throttle body and the airflow meter.

WEll I got out the propane torch today, and sprayed propane around hoses and that, and checked the vacuum lines and could not find any vacuum leaks. So, hmmm. I'm stuck again. The car idles around 900rpms, and in the archives people talk about 750rpm base idle. Once again, I do not have the bentley bible or the procedure to set base idle for K-jet, however I do know that when the idle motor is grounded, blue/white wire, the car dies. Why would this happen??? However, when the car is idling with the help of the idle motor, I can feel it vibrate in my hands, so I'm pretty sure that it works.

Thanks for the suggestion, any more help??

Smith

If you have no leaks then you have to set the base idle. When you have the blue/blue white grounded the car stops so you may have to adjust the throttle position screw which sets the stopping point for the throttle. It has a little locknut that needs to be loosened, then turn the screw to move the throttle up. turn up the throttle until the idle holds to about 800 rpm, Then you have to re-set the adjustment for the throttle position switch to get CIS working. This will get the car to hold idle but it my mask a dirty thottle body or other problems. Get the book and set it up to spec.

3mm allen wrench, kind of long. There's a small hole on the top of the rear of the intake manifold slightly in front of where the intake tube attaches from the bottom. It's a tiny hole down in a little crevice, hard to see. There may be a plug in it, but mine was gone.

There's an allen screw in there that changes the pivot point of the fuel meter assembly. The screw is hard to hit with that wrench, as it's all open down inside there. While it's idling you have to have a soft touch since pressure on the screw affects the mixture. You have to turn it VERY slightly and pull the wrench to let it stabilize.

Ideally this should be done with a CO meter so you can set it correctly, but it can be done by ear if you're patient. Don't turn it too much or you may not get it to idle after it dies.

If you do a search on this site for fuel mixture adjustment you should find more info. I did this when my '81 240 wouldn't pass emissions and cleaned it up substantially. But mine's not a turbo. Good luck!

Check for vacuum leaks around intake and injector seals. My 82 NA would hunt until I changed the seals which were rock hard. Spray some carb cleaner around the injectors and see if idle surges which indicates leaks.
