How high should tach go before gears automatically shift 700

86 740 turbo question. Can someone tell me how high the tachometer should register before the gears shift on a AW71? I tried to adjust my kickdown cable and now it seems like gears are not shifting until the tach gets to around 3500-4000 rpm. Engine seems to be revving higher than I remembered it doing before the "adjustment".

Well, first off, do you have a bit of lead foot? If so, it will shift higher. The kickdown cable should only be pulling it down a gear when you punch the throttle. Try "unadjusting" the cable. If there isn't any change, maybe flush the trans fluid. Though, I don't see how adjusting the cable would cause all of your shift points to change.

Adjusting the kickdown cable will definitely change all the shift points. That's why you do it.

The kickdown cable controls the balance between road speed (governor input) and demand (throttle input). If the balance is too far towards throttle input, road speed is less of a factor in determining shift points. In fact, if adjusted all the way towards throttle input, it may never shift out of 1st gear! Conversely, if it's all the way towards governor input, it may upshift but never downshift, even with wide-open throttle, until you come to a complete stop.

If you drive responsibly, adjusting this cable will probably not cause damage. You can make small adjustments until it feels right to you. There is also a lengthy section in the FAQ or any repair manual regarding the correct adjustment.
