Why Shouldn't I buy a 97 960?? 900

Have had my eye on a 97 960 with 50K on it. It looks clean and I read the 700/900 FAQ and the overall flavor is that the later years of the 960 were good ones. Would I want to sell my 93 945 for a 97 960??

Well if you just have a hankerin’ to buy a new car, you sure could do a lot worse than a ’97 960. I’ve been tempted by them too – they seem to be very nice cars. But then again, your ’93 945 ain’t no slouch either!

If you really want to look at it logically, keep the ’93, put the thousands of dollars you save into a Roth IRA (or a series of Roths over the next few years) and plan on retiring early… that’s the logical thing to do.

But that ’97 sure would be one sweet ride, eh?

I guess it is tempting, but it sounds like you already have decent cars.
I probably would see if you can drive it for a couple hours or 1/2 day and
see if its really worth the more costly upkeep + lower fuel economy. I love my
'91 940 SE, yes it does have the dual power seats, auto climate control, and
other highline electronics. BUT.. I really like that 4 cyl turbo. its rock solid
at 166,000 miles right now, has no leaks, synthetic oils in all gearboxes possible, and almost as low maintenance as my '87 dodge 1/2 ton truck !

I would look into an extended test drive.

good luck.

Check the kbb.com for trade in value and retail value and see if you can get a good price. You already know that OBDII cars are harder to maintain and parts from a 960 aren't falling off shelves for free. But it is always nice to get a new car. Take lots of pics of your old car and keep them in the garage, next to the photo of the Porsche. :)

Uh, well as the owner of a 97 s90 with 176k miles that has been pretty reliable over its lifetime, I dont see why not. With 50K on it, it is a baby for sure. Of course with only 104k on the 945, you have a long way to go with that car too. Since this is the first volvo I've ever owned, I cant compare it to other models except what I read here. If my car were to go TU tomorrow, I would be looking for something just like you have found.

To tell you the truth, I’d be a little tempted. Just a little. Why shouldn’t you? Higher maintenance costs, harder to find and more expensive parts as posted by a 960 owner or two. Otherwise...
