Any problems with bypassing a fuel relay? 200 1977

We need to start a competition for the most dodgey repairs on our bricks, there'd be some stiff competion on here. I'm already driving with the heater core bypassed, bits of pepsi can fiberglassed into the rear quarter and gutter rails, a dodgey intank feed and my third head gasket. Now I have no fuel relay either. At least I no longer have a home made switch to power up the turn-signal relay (that got interesting going round corners).

I had a spare K-Jet relay installed ('77, the silver cube with 5 pins sticking out of it), but my spare broke too, and yesterday I had to pull over and bypass the relay with a loop of wire. Finally the car is getting enough fuel and it's running great (apart from a vac leak I can't find which is giving me an intermittent high idle, and the blown exhaust flange)

Anyway, over the next few week, I've got about 2000 kms to drive around the state (very busy and lots of places I need to be). Is this going to be alright with the fuel pumps jumped to run continuously? (obviously I unplug the jumper when the car's parked).

Any potential problems?

It will be fine except for the aforementioned accident scenario.

I may have to do this on my '81, since I'm installing an aftermarket ignition system to alleviate an intermittent no-start problem. If the ignition signal won't run the fuel-pump relay after the swap, I'll be wiring my pumps to come on with the key via a fuse and relay. That way the pumps shut down with the key off and there won't be dieseling problems.

Your car should have 2 fuel pump relays, if I'm not mistaken, unless you have a different set up then the one on my '77 244.

I think I have a pair of spare relays I wouldn't mind sending off if you need them. The are pretty easy to come by around here, and they hardly ever fail from what I understand.

Other then that, just hope that you don't get into an accident that would be made worse from gas continuing to be pumped (potential fire hazard, etc...)

I'm surprised your original and spare relays failed though, since it uses the really early style. Do you have a soldering iron?

Thanks, but I can probably find a spare one while I'm home. Getting parts here at college is a bitch, the local parts shop doesn't even having a listing for a B21 exhaust flange gasket. Once I'm in Sydney it'll get a whole lot easier.

I know I have two relays, and I managed to break both of them. The other one just blew fuses till I replaced it, and I've now gone through two of the silver ones. I've found that anything that "rarely fails", probably will on my car. Volvo red blocks, for instance, rarely blow up, and I managed that as well. I'm on my 4th starter motor, 3rd alternator, you get the picture.

You're right though, it is a fire risk, and also caused the motor to diesel for a while when I turned the ignition off today.

Still, it's good to be on the road again, I've got 200 miles to drive tonight, and more on sunday.

Well I drove about 400 miles or so with it jumpered, sometimes the connection isn't perfect, and needs jiggling, but it goes pretty well.
