1995 960 check engine light 900 1995

I recently had a used computer put in (2 mths ago) to alleviate a constant "check engine" light in which two mechanics couldn't find the problem. The computer appeared to be the problem (because of the codes it was showing). I was driving to work, coming to a stop & the car started sputtering as if it wanted to cut off. I put it in neutral & pushed the gas pedal; it continued to idle fast & sputter. I pulled over, turned the car off and then restarted it. The stinking check engine light came on and the car ran fine. I drove another 19 miles with no problem. Any idea what could be wrong? I don't have a computer to see what code it's giving.

If the car is a '95 you shouldn't need any special tools to read the codes. Follow the reading procedure as described in the 700/900 FAQ (Fuel Injection and Ignition Diagnostic Procedures in Bosch LH-Jetronic 2.4+, Regina, and EZK 116/REX 1.) and report back.

The OBDII system (1996 and on) does require a reader, though.

Check the 700/900 FAQ for any symptoms that might match yours. It could be anything from a failing sensor to ignition harness degradation.
