Fix for a nagging problem on late model 240s 200

It seems that every one of our 244s has a problem where the ends of the air dams come loose from their connections at the bumper ends, leaving an unsightly gap. The ends are held to the bumper ends by a tiny eye and screw that just breaks off.

The problem can be fixed using the metal clips that hold 240 series blower housings together. Get some spare clips from a local PnP, then follow these steps:

1. Remove the belly pan.
2. Release the plastic bracket (10 mm nut) that holds the bumper end to the front fender (you can install the clips without this step, but it makes it easier when you can pull the bumper ends our away from the fender).
3. The bottom of the bumper end and top of the air dam have mating flanges. Line these up.
4. Add 3-4 clips along the mating flanges. The clips are a perfect size to fit over the flanges, but you may want to squeeze them with pliers so they hold even tighter.
5. Reinstall the plastic bracket and the belly pan.

The clips will hold the bumper and air dam together so closely that they seem to be one piece. The clips are very secure, but you could further reinforce the joint by adding a little epoxy cement to them after they're installed.

I did this fix on our '92 244 and it now looks awesome!

I know exactly what you mean. The passenger side of my front air dam has come loose, and it's now kind of wedged between/underneath the bumper edge as best as I can get it. I'll give your method a shot, should I find those clips.

That's a good-looking car, Yancey. I like the dark blue color and the egg crate grille.

I am going to claim ignorance. Where is "240 series blower housings together". I have this problem and would love to take advantage of your fix but do not know where these clips are located. Thanks

Blower housings on 240s contain the heater core, a/c evaporator, blower motor, and two impellers. They are located behind the middle console with the radio, heater controls, center vents, etc. The housing itself is a two piece grey plastic molding with two black plastic enclosures on the ends that each house an impeller. The impeller enclosures have a end cover secured by 6-8 spring steel clips. These are the clips you want for your air dam.

For a visual reference, see Art Benstein's excellent write-up on blower motor replacement:

http://users.erols.com/benstein/

The photo above step 7 shows the clips.

Of course, you don't want to cannibalize your own car for these clips, but you can find them at any P&P with 240s on hand, or some kind soul on the Board might volunteer to donate a few. I would send you some, but all three of our 240s have the problem and I used up the supply from my parts car.

Good luck.

I've had the same problem and those clips work. Especialy when you don't want to spend the money to get another front air dam.
Thanks
Rodney
