96 Volvo 960 900

Hello All:

I've been reading this forum for two weeks now and I am totally amazed at the knowledge available at this forum. I purchased my 1996 Volvo 960 almost two weeks ago and just love the way the vehicle drives/handles. I drove it over a thousand miles after the purchase and everything worked perfectly. In the past week, the heater seats stopped working but the lights on the switches still function. I'll follow the procedures recommended in the FAQ and try to resolve this. I also have the check engine light coming on along with the low coolant level initicator on the dash. I've ordered a new thermostat and coolant level sensor and plan on replacing these as well this week.

Now for the questions:

1. The coolant level remains constant and I don't have an overheating issue - Is there anything else I should replace?

2. I purchased two keyless remote on ebay - there's seem to be two different models / part numbers which both advertised as working for the 96 Volvo 850/960 models. I purchased both part numbers but have been unsuccessful in prgramming these to my Volvo. I purchased a lame set of progromming instructions on ebay as well which basicall outlined turning the key to position I or II five times and on the fifth time, leave it on and hit one of the keys on your remote. Needless to say, this did not accomplish the reprogramming. Any suggestions would be very valued and welcomed.

Welcome to Volvoland. Cant help with the key fobs, but I would tell you to keep an eye on the radiator. The plastic nipples tend to break with age and can crack and seep coolant for a while. Replacing the thermostant and coolant level sensor will help. You will also need to get access to a code reader to figure out what codes are being written to the computer. There are stand alone readers available at about 100 up or sofware/serial interface units for about 88 and up. Or you can try the local autoparts store and see if they will read the codes for you. Good luck . How many miles on this car?

Thanks for the response. My 960 has 105,634 miles on it. I bought it on ebay and flew down to Vegas to finalize the transaction. I thought $5K was a good price considering it's pristine condition. This is my first Volvo and I flat out love the way this car feels. The doors have a very solid feel compared to American or Japanese cars. I'll inspect the radiator more closely and see if it requires further attention. Thanks.
