did most US late model (1988 and up) 240s come with solid front rotors?

The last solid rotor 240 I saw was a 1983DL (although some earlier models had vented fronts anyway); all my later 240's ('84 and a couple of '93's) all had vented front rotors.

solid rotors went out LONG before 88. all have been vented since 84 or so. and so it goes, chuck.

I believe they're vented after '85.
