'91 240 starts with a lot of throttle applied but.... 200 1991

will not start under normal circumstances, any great place to start? seems to get gas with increased pedal pressure on start up but then won't stay running unless the accelerator is held down which of course causes high rpms, so I only did it once.

thanks for any advice or encouragment

Now I just need the "check engine" light off, I'm sure it's somewhere in the Bently manual, but if anyone knows let me know eh?

Thanks again for all the help!

Big Fat BINGO to Rhaire and 240snowmobile baby! unplugged that AMM and the car actually idled right along slowly, whereas it would just run then konk out with the AMM plugged in.

So for a grand total of $275 I have a Bosch reconditioned unit hopefully in transit. What a rip off, but the guy that sells his for $150 (injection labs)is MIA, his phone no worky and I had to have the part.

Thanks! Sounds like this is solved, right?!?

The idle control motor is the canister under your throtle body. You said you cleaned your TB recently, did your idle problem start after your cleaning? If you removed the TB for cleaning, did you put the linkage back on properly after cleaning the TB? Just a thought, as I have done that myself once.

Thanks guys, I'll start checking into this stuff tonight. It wont be the throttle body, I just cleaned that not too long ago. idle control valve--hmmm haven't looked at that in awhile, or did I?

Cheers!

Clean the idle air control valve and the throttle body. See FAQ's.

Try unplugging the air mass meter, then try starting it. If it idles fine, you have a bad AMM. It will not drive, but it will idle. Buy a used one, they are cheap.

In fact, someone has one in the classifieds here for $40. It's the correct "016" unit for this car. If I owned one of this era, I'd buy it as a spare.

Also inspect the big plastic intake hose for cracks or holes. My 86 needed one badly a few years ago and made a big difference in starting and running. $15 or so from FCP.

I would start with an idle screw adjustment, but I don't think the '91s had that.

Maybe you have a fouled up spark plug? Maybe a bad wire? I've seen that cause this problem.

Sorry I can't give you more info, don't know too much about the later 240s...

No idle screw in the normal sense. There is a throttle stop screw that is factory adjusted and normally there is never a need to tinker with it. The IAC controls the idle. Sounds like an AMM problem.
