Recommendations for seat conversions into '75 164e? Comfort issue. 140-160

Hi, folks, I have a '75 164e into which I have put a 244gl interior, including the seats. However, I am 6ft 4ins and I find the 200 series seats lacking in two ways: first, the headrest is actually a neck-rest for me, way too short for it to be meaningful if I got rearended. Second, the lumbar 'lump' isn't quite in the right place for my back, and this shows up on extended periods spent behind the wheel. I have bad back, and this is a real irritant.

Anyone got any recommendations for other seats that can be fairly easily adapted to the lower part of the 200 series frame (the assembly with the rails, that bolts to the floor pan)? I read somewhere that it's a nightmare to put in 700 series seats -- has anyone tried this?

I guess I am thinking BMW 3 or 5 series, or Volvo 700 series... in particular the leather 760 style. Obviously they have to look somewhat right for the car. I can't think of any Japanese seats that would look good (and I find them flimsy anyway).

Cheers

Mac

Of the cars I've tried European Ford Scorpio's had good seats with inflatable lumbar support. Mercedes W123 or W124 from the 80's also had pretty good seats, but at least on the 123 adjustable lumbar support was optional only. As mentioned already Recaro has really nice seats but might be hard to find at a decent price. My daily driver is a 95 525 and the seats are OK, but again, they don't have adjustable lumbar support.

I'd go to a junkyard or used car dealer and have some sits...

I assume your 240 seats are black leather...? Some of the E30 (325 series late '80s-'90s) BMWs have recarros stock. If you could find some in black leather, they'd look good and might treat you well. I've never sat in one though, so I can't say for sure. 850 seats are comfy too... though they do have issues with the power seat controls as I've come to learn. I'd go for the most manual control seats you can find.

I would count on some significant work in getting about anything in though, but I can't imagine it would be too difficult. 164 has lots of space, so I'd think you have a lot of options.

I have SAAB 9000 seats in my 164e(74) and they are very confortable. In addition, they are electric and work fine.
