No spark on #5 cylinder 1994 960 160K 900 1994

All of the sudden my 1994 960 started running on 5 cylinders. With my very limited knowledge of mechanics I started pulling the coils out one by one until I determined that #5 cylinder was not firing. I switched coils and plugs to see if that would help but no luck. I pulled the coil and plug out and cranked the engine and found there is no spark coming from the plug. I then used a test light and determined that there is power on both wires that come to the coil. So now I am stumped. If I have power to the coil then why no spark? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Bob

The coil packs use the bolt holes as a ground connection I believe. They won't work unless you provide a ground.

I agree with porkface, the Power Stage in located at the bottom, back of the lower intake manifold ball (for cylinders #4,5 & 6). If you want, you can swap it out with the one in the front of the lower intake manifold ball (for cylinders #1,2 & 3) and see it #2 starts misfiring instead of #5. That will confirm it's one of the two Power Stages.

1 of the ignition modules has died. i think it's the 1 on the back of the intake that does 4,5 and 6. you can see it from underneath the car.

in the future, use a digital volt meter to look for power. a test light has too much continuity to ground and ecms don't like that. a meter will have a least 10 mega ohms of resistance. plus, a meter will tell you exactly how much voltage is there. 9v and 13v don't look that different with a light. good luck, chuck.

Chuck,
That did the trick. The module that controls 1,3, & 5 was bad. I swapped them out just to check and had no spark in #2 instead of #5. Got a new module and it runs like new!
Thanks again,
Bob
