Adding an in-tank pump to a 76 240 without one - and thanks. 200 1976

Hello Brickboarders,

I hear a loud whining noise from my main pump when the gas falls to 4 gallons or so, and the car starts to run out of gas when there is still a good 2+ gallons in the tank. I know for a fact (because I looked inside the tank) that my car doesn't have the in-tank pump. I was told it was partway through the production year that they started putting them in, and that there used to be a kit to install/retrofit the early production cars. I'm thinking this might be the time to do it while the tank is drained and opened up. Has anyone done this who could advise? I know the pumps are available, but what else is required to mount it? thanks for any advice

Also, thanks much for all the good advice about cleaning throttle body/flame trap/air regulators/and swapping injection lines. It has greatly smoothed the idle on this car. Carl.

there were a couple of campaigns to deal with your problem, they were superceded by the recall on the fuel tank. they tend to leak at the drain plug. if yours leaks and if the campaign is still active, then the dealer will replace everything from the gas cap up to, but not including, the main pump. if the recall is dead, then get the latest 240 tank, etc, you can, including the main pump and accumulator, filler neck-EVERYTHING. it will bolt up with little fuss. good luck, chuck.

You might check with your dealer, if he's friendly. It *may* have been subject to a recall.

This summer, the dealer (and VCNA) put a new tank, both pumps, and many hoses and fasteners into my 75 245...

The car was recalled in 1980.

I agree, I'd swap tanks with the latest model junk you can find, or a car from a southern state. I just replaced a sender in a 1989 New England car, and both steel lines broke by the time I had it out. A new sending unit is about $90 from FCP, and that's probably the best price out there. The pump price is additional. And don't forget the fuel sock filter.

I know the early cars were subject to this when fuel pumps were on their way out, but keep in mind the fuel filter may be dirty too.

Good luck with it!

I dont know if the kit is still avail, check with a dealer, But, how about a swap of tanks with a later car, in tank pump already included? prolly easier than swapping fuel pumps.
