Vacuum noise by brake pedal?! What is this craziness! 700

88 volvo 740 turbo with 250k.

I started up car after washing it this afternoon and I noticed a hissing noise coming from my feet. Ruling out voodoo and Ohio serpents, I undid the bottom cover to inspect what was goin on. The noise, which sounds like a vacuum leak, is coming from the plunger that goes in to the firewall and is connected to the brake pedal. When I push in the brake pedal the hissing subsides.

Anyone had this happen before? What is this and what should I do?

Jes

Sounds to me like the pipe has come off the vacuum valve which is an emergency release for the cruise if the electronics fail.bet your cruise isn't working?
The valve may be damaged or faulty if the pipe hasn't come off.

Best of luck with your head down in the pedals, but you could scrape off the chewing gum while you're there.

twas my first thought reading the subject, but the description of where the hissing is coming from and that it goes away with pedal depressed - makes me depressed. Boosters aren't fun.

craaaaaaaap. That is what I suspected. And the brakes are acting like they have air in the lines. Which they don't. Squishy pedal and my ABS coming on when it isn't supposed to although that is probably due to dirty sensors. Hmmm. Thanks for the help- I'll take a crack at the Juicy Fruit while I'm down there.
