Breadlike engine odor/brakelights all failed 200

Yes, breadlike. Just cruising down 495--the beltway of political infamy, for you non-DC folks--the other night, and my lady and I smelled a bready, not unpleasant odor from the engine. I'm fairly sure this was never an option in the DL--but maybe in the Classic.

There was definitely not a bakery nearby. Then it started smelling a bit like something melting. Needless to say, I haven't driven it since I got it home. I'll be taking it to the mechanic this weekend (which I need to do anyway, for other things.)

Just curious if anyone has any idea of what this could be. I checked under the hood with the engine on and didn't notice anything wrong (including a repeat of the mystery aroma). One small hose did have a split in it.

I just changed the oil, BTW.

To top it off, the brakelights--all of them!--failed at some point. Probably a fuse?

Thanks for any answers/speculation/advice.

Small hose with a split may not make a smell, but could make a vacuum leak. Quick fix is to cut the hose back a minimum amount, put a drop of ATF into the end, and reinstall it. Replace with a new hose later, The ATF makes it slip onto the fitting easier.

Brake lights that fail all at once. The two sides are separate, due do operation of the bulb failure warning system. It has to be either the fuse or the brake light switch.

240 fuses are prone to get oxidizing on their tips. It's easy to put a fingertip on each fuse and rock it so that it turns a little in their mounting clamps. Do it in the morning, or when no fuse might be heated up.

If the fuse is blown, and you have a sedan, it may be due to a water leak in the rear lights. Water on a hot bulb will blow the bulb and maybe make a short.

Hope you were not in the mixing bowl. (I-95 vs I-395 vs I-495)

Good Luck,

Bob
