Hard start, then runs/idles just fine? 200 1989

My NA 245 is hard to start, but then runs perfectly. It used to start with just a quick turn of the key, now it takes a few turns to fire up, seems to stumble for a second, then runs fine. The next warm start will be the same thing.

A few months ago, I removed the distributor cap, and found the rotor was nearly burned up. Replaced it, and it seemed fine for a while. I inspected it again this weekend. Fine.

Why would a rotor burn up in the first place? Essentially, the epoxy that holdes the copper strip down (from center to end) was burned out. Could the cause of this be my current starting problem?

thanks all!

When you changed the rotor you also changed the cap, right? Certainly if the rotor was old the cap probably was too. And an old cap/rotor with corroded terminals could cause more resistance and higher temperatures enough to burn out a rotor like that, although it's hard to know just from your description.

What's missing from your post is information about what else you have done recently to your car in terms of maintenance & repair. From your description it just sounds like it could just need a simple tuneup. When was the last time you replaced your plugs & wires, air filter, cleaned your TB and air valve, cleaned up your battery terminals, etc? Make sure all of these items are done, and if the problem still persists then post again with more specific information about what you've done and how the car responded.

You might try to pull the codes from the computer to see if you get anything.

Is the problem the same, whether your tank is full, or near empty?

If the problem is better with a full tank, check your in-tank pump.

I have the same problem, although until mine warms for about 30 seconds, it may die if I try to drive. Once it warms ever so slightly, it runs perfectly. I'll be interested in seeing the responses as I've cleaned the TB, put on new injector seals, new plugs, wires, coil, distributor cap and rotor, run injector cleaner through it, put on a new fuel filter, new airbox thermostat, etc. The car only has 61K miles so I'm baffled.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Good stuff.

Yes, I have tuned it this year. I bought the plug wires, but inspected the current ones, and left them on. I will change them out tonight to see if there's a difference. I have not cleaned the throttle body or the air valve, so I'll check that...thanks.

No difference if tank is full or low.

I have had a problem before with the fuses for the fuel pump(s) corroding, and causing a similar problem, but that was usually while the car was running as well during startup. I now use stainless steel capped fuses and a smear of electrical grease on all fuse tips. Also the fuse by the driver's fender has given problems from water and corrosion. I covered it with the finger from a rubber glove, but it still gets damp.

I have a very hard-to-find leak in the windshield area, and cannot find the exact location. It could be contributing to this new problem as well. Hurricane Jeanne came through last night (upstate SC), and the floors are soaked again today. Arghhhh!
