parking brake lever won't stay up

My parking brake lever, on my 1986 240dl wagon, won't stay up at all. The brake actually works, but the lever will not click at all. Any ideas?

Shoot a little PB Blaster down the handle through the gap between the handle casing and the release knob and its end. Work the knob a few times and see if it begins to catch.

From a safety perspective, you may want to pull the center console cover and do a little housekeeping. Grease the detent wheel (semicircular toothed wheel) that latches the handle.

I tried it a few times, shooting the PB Blaster in there, and nothing has changed. It seems like there is no way to get inside the lever, the plastic housing doesn't come off. I don't know what to do now, I really don't want to take it in.
